What's the Deal with Digestive Health?



Let's tackle one of the most difficult challenges in modern health — the one where so many interventions fall short, where the supplement aisle keeps expanding, where the protocols keep getting more complicated, and where most people still aren't getting better.

Gut issues are everywhere. Bloating, gas, constipation, loose stools, reflux, IBS, food sensitivities, the chronic low-grade discomfort that just never quite goes away. The natural health world has been telling people for two decades that their gut is the root of all their problems, and they're not wrong — but somewhere between identifying the problem and actually fixing it, the conversation has gotten so tangled in product offerings, protocols, and conflicting advice that most people are spending more money on gut health than ever before and still feeling like garbage.

There's a reason for that. And it's not what most of the protocols want you to think it is.

What's Actually Going On With Your Gut

The major patterns most people are dealing with aren't separate problems. They're symptoms of one underlying issue showing up in different ways:

Leaky gut — the intestinal lining gets compromised, tight junctions between cells loosen, and undigested food particles and bacterial byproducts leak into circulation. The immune system responds. Why Most Gut Protocols Fall Short

Walk into any health food store. The digestive section is enormous. Twenty different probiotic formulas. Digestive enzymes in five potencies. L-glutamine powders. Slippery elm. Marshmallow root. Aloe juice. Bone broth proteins. Leaky gut formulas. Candida cleanses. Parasite protocols. GI restore complexes. Each bottle promises to fix what the last bottle didn't.

The honest reason this keeps failing for most people: the gut doesn't repair without the raw materials to repair with. You can take all the supportive supplements you want, but if your body is glycine-deficient, you can't rebuild the tight junctions and mucosal lining that make up your gut barrier. If your methylation is stalled, you can't produce the bile acids that control microbial overgrowth in the small intestine, can't manufacture the neurotransmitters that run your enteric nervous system, and can't clear the histamine that's driving half your symptoms. If your glutathione is depleted, your immune system can't keep opportunistic organisms in check the way it's designed to.

The gut isn't broken in isolation. It runs on the same substrate as everything else — methyl groups, glycine, glutathione, magnesium, ATP. When the substrate is depleted (and for most people in 2026, it is), the gut is often where the depletion shows up most visibly because the gut turns over so fast. The Glycine Problem Nobody Talks About

This one is genuinely underappreciated. Glycine is the most abundant amino acid in collagen — and collagen is the structural protein that holds your gut lining together. Tight junctions, the mucosal barrier, the connective tissue underneath the epithelium — all collagen-dependent, all glycine-dependent.

Glycine is also required for:

  • Bile acid conjugation (you make glycine-conjugated bile acids; without glycine, you can't make bile properly, which means fat digestion suffers and microbial control in the small intestine breaks down)

  • Glutathione synthesis (glycine is one of three amino acids that make glutathione, along with cysteine and glutamate)

  • Mucin production (the protective mucus layer that lines the gut)

  • Neurotransmitter regulation (glycine itself is a neurotransmitter in the enteric nervous system)

The catch: modern diets are catastrophically glycine-deficient relative to historical patterns. Traditional diets included the whole animal — skin, connective tissue, bones, organs — which are glycine-rich. Modern muscle-meat-heavy diets are heavy in methionine and short on glycine. The methionine-to-glycine ratio in the typical Western diet is the inverse of what humans evolved on. Research suggests most adults are running a daily glycine deficit of several grams.

You can drink bone broth daily and still not close that gap unless you're drinking a lot of it from properly made stock. Supplementing glycine directly is the most reliable way to ensure adequate substrate for gut repair, glutathione synthesis, and bile production simultaneously.

This is the missing piece in most gut protocols. They focus on probiotics or enzymes or fiber. None of them provide the structural raw materials the gut needs to rebuild itself.

The methylation/gut connection is the second piece nobody is talking about well. Methylation is required for:

Bile acid production — the liver produces bile, which the gut uses for fat digestion and microbial control in the small intestine. Bile is itself antimicrobial — it helps keep the small intestine from being colonized by organisms that should stay in the large intestine. Impaired methylation means impaired bile production, which means impaired microbial control, which is one of the upstream causes of SIBO and small intestinal dysbiosis.

Histamine clearance — the enzyme HNMT (histamine N-methyltransferase) requires SAM-e, which requires methylation, to clear histamine. People with impaired methylation often have histamine accumulation, which manifests as food sensitivities, hives, headaches, gut symptoms after high-histamine foods, and a broader pattern often called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). Many people with mysterious food reactions are actually dealing with impaired histamine clearance, not the foods themselves.

Enteric nervous system function — the gut has its own nervous system with around 500 million neurons. It produces approximately 90% of the body's serotonin. Neurotransmitter production requires methylation. When methylation is impaired, the enteric nervous system can't run properly, and gut motility, sensation, and signaling all suffer.

Detoxification pathways — phase II liver detoxification depends on methylation, and the gut and liver share much of the detoxification burden. Impaired methylation means impaired detox, which means more toxic load on the gut.

If you have a MTHFR variant or chronic methylation stress, your gut is dealing with impaired bile, accumulated histamine, dysfunctional enteric nervous system signaling, and increased toxic load — all at the same time. No probiotic will fix this. No digestive enzyme will fix this. You have to address the methylation substrate.
