Most discussions of methylation focus on supply. How to get more methylfolate. How to support the cycle. How to feed the system that produces methyl groups.
This is half the picture. Maybe less than half.
The other half — the half almost nobody discusses — is demand. Where do all those methyl groups actually go once your body produces them? What competes for the SAM you make every day? And which single process consumes so much of the daily supply that everything else has to run on what's left over?
The answer is one of the most overlooked insights in methylation biochemistry. Once you see it, everything starts to click. And it changes how you think about supporting your methylation system entirely.
The Household Budget Analogy
Think about how a responsible household manages money. There are dozens of expenses every month — groceries, utilities, transportation, healthcare, entertainment, savings, kids' activities. Each one has to be funded from the same finite income.

What Consumes 40-80% Of Your Daily Methyl Groups
Your body is constantly making creatine.

Why This Matters For MTHFR
In a person with no MTHFR variants, full methylation capacity, abundant substrate, and minimal environmental load, the creatine drain is significant but manageable. There is enough SAM being produced that all the downstream processes still get what they need.
In a person with MTHFR variants, the math changes.
The variant slows one of the routes that supplies methyl groups to the cycle. The body still produces SAM, but at reduced efficiency on that particular pathway. What gives is everything downstream.

The DNA regulation, the detoxification pathways, the membrane repair, the cognitive function — all of it gets less of the daily SAM supply than it needs, because the creatine drain has already taken its share off the top.

Remember that creatine synthesis is a two-step process. The first step combines arginine and glycine to make guanidinoacetate. The second step uses SAM to convert that precursor into creatine.
This means creatine synthesis is not just spending SAM. It is also spending glycine.
Glycine is universally deficient in modern diets. The body needs ten to fifteen grams per day under metabolic stress and synthesizes only about three grams. That gap of seven to twelve grams per day is filled in ancestral diets by connective tissue, bone broth, organ meats, and whole-animal eating — and almost completely unfilled in modern diets of muscle meat and processed food.
So creatine synthesis is draining two things simultaneously: the SAM pool and the glycine pool. Both of which are constrained in most modern people, regardless of MTHFR status.
Supplementing creatine directly stops both drains at once. The body no longer has to make creatine, so the SAM is freed and the glycine is freed.
